Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, and improvisation.
Origins & History
Jazz began in New Orleans around 1895-1910. The 1920s Jazz Age made it nationally popular. Swing era big bands dominated the 1930s-40s. Bebop revolutionized jazz in the 1940s. Cool jazz, hard bop, and modal jazz followed. Fusion emerged in the 1970s, combining jazz with rock and funk.
